Smart Metering – the smart cabling solution for intelligent meter systems

The law on the digitalization of the energy turnaround, which came into force on January 1, 2017, establishes the legal framework for smart meters: smart meters will become mandatory.

Smart Metering – the smart cabling solution for intelligent meter systems

Smart meters are digital communication-capable electricity meters, also called intelligent meters. They provide a continuous record of energy consumption and its usage time and present daily, weekly, monthly and yearly electricity consumption values to customers and network operators.

The modern meters are communicatively connected via a so-called Smart Meter Gateway. This represents the administrative unit and enables the integration of one or more modern measuring devices, also for natural gas, water or district heating, in a communication network. An intelligent measuring system consists of a modern measuring device and a communication unit (Smart Meter Gateway).

To integrate a measuring system into a communication network, for example, an existing infrastructure such as broadband internet is used to transmit the data to the network operator and customers. METZ CONNECT has developed a simple solution especially for this challenge. The universally applicable retrofit cabling solution from METZ CONNECT connects an intelligent meter (smart meter) from the meter point connection point (APZ) to the customer's terminating point network or house transfer point (APL).

Example of use

METZ CONNECT develops customer-specific cabling solutions.

For one customer, METZ CONNCT developed a hybrid solution of fiber optic and copper, taking into account all relevant standards for the simple connection of a smart meter to a communication network.

The aim of the assembled connection technology is to create an individual, cost-effective, ready-to-install retrofit cabling solution without any prior knowledge of the house structure. Which guarantees a quick and easy point-to-point connection from the APZ room to the APL. This solution significantly reduces installation time and costs compared to installation with splices and pigtails or cabling with individual patchcords. You can also use the METZ CONNECT solution to connect other measuring equipment such as water meters or district heating to a communication system.
